The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is the military organisation responsible for the defense of the Commonwealth of Australia and its national interests. It has three branches: the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The ADF has a strength of just over 100,000 personnel and is supported by the Department of Defence and several other civilian agencies. In the early 1900s, the Australian Government created distinct branches for the armed services. Each service had an independent chain of command. In 1976, the government made a strategic change and established the ADF to place the services under a single headquarters. Over time, the degree of integration has increased, and tri-service headquarters, logistics, and training institutions have supplanted many single-service establishments. The ADF has been deployed around the world, including as part of combat and peacekeeping missions.
The Australian Army is a crucial land warfare force for Australia and a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Established in 1901 with the amalgamation of the colonial forces of Australia after the Federation of Australia. The Army comprised the six separate colonial military forces components that were disbanded. From April 2015 to June 2020 the Army sent a 300-member unit to Iraq. Known as Task Group Taji, as part of Operation Okra. The primary objective of Task Group Taji was to support a capacity-building mission by providing training to Iraqi forces. Australian troops worked in concert with their New Zealand counterparts throughout the training period.
The Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The RAN traces its roots back to the Commonwealth Naval Forces (CNF), which was formed in 1901 through the consolidation of Australia’s colonial navies after the Federation. Originally focused on local defense, the RAN gradually assumed responsibility for regional security as the British Empire’s influence in the South Pacific waned. Today, the RAN plays a vital role in the ADF’s mission to defend Australia and its interests. The navy contributes to this mission by providing well-maintained and fully-equipped ships, submarines, and aircraft, along with skilled personnel to operate them. These assets help to safeguard Australia’s sovereignty and security in the region.
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is the primary air and space force of Australia and is a crucial part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Established in March of 1921 as the Australian Air Force, resulting from the separation of the Australian Air Corps from the Army. January of 1920 marked the merger of the Army and Navy’s separate aerial services, resulting in the formation of the RAAF. RAAF members carry on the traditions of the Australian Flying Corps. The Australian Flying Corps played a significant role in World War I.
Recently, in 2021, the RAAF commemorated its 100th anniversary. In January 2022, RAAF Amberley and Richmond dispatched two P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and one C-130J Hercules to conduct aerial reconnaissance of Tonga after the 2022 eruption and tsunami. These flights aimed to evaluate the damage and provide information for potential future disaster support requests, according to Australian Defence News.
