Australian Army Apprentice School

In 1948, the Australian Regular Army (ARA) opened a trade training school outside Melbourne in Victoria to meet the growing technological needs of the post-war Australian Army. From across Australia, under-mature age soldiers between 15 and 17½ years old were enlisted after a challenging selection process to undergo a live–in, three–year trade qualifying course at the Army Apprentices School (AAS) located at Balcombe Army Camp, Mt Martha.

Hello and welcome to Framed Memorabilia! We are excited to showcase a beautifully framed collection featuring the Unit Badge of the Australian Army Apprentices School Badge – 1954/1990. The Australian Army is Australia’s principal land warfare force, a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. In 1948, the first School intake, consisting of young lads between 15 and 17 years of age, commenced training at Balcombe Camp, Mt Martha on the Mornington Peninsula south of Melbourne Victoria.

Framed Memorabilia honours the personnel who serve/served.

Following the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953, Australian Army military insignia, badges and buttons were produced with the Saint Edward’s or “Queen’s” Crown. *Note that the King’s Crown badge continued to be issued to Apprentices as late as 1957 and was used on official School documentation until at least 1961.
