The Efficiency Decoration (ED) was instituted on 17 October 1930 and replaced several former long service awards including the Volunteer Officers’ Decoration, the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Decoration and the Territorial Decoration. The Efficiency (ED) Decoration was awarded to officers of the volunteer Military Forces throughout the Commonwealth and Australia.

The decoration is an oak leaf wreath with the Royal Cypher of Queen Elizabeth II, with her Royal Cypher “EIIR” for “Elizabeth II Regina”, in the centre below the Royal Crown. The medal ribbon is suspended from a rectangular silver bar brooch inscribed “AUSTRALIA”. The Efficiency Decoration (Australia) was superseded by the Reserve Force Decoration on 20 April 1982.
