The NZDF consists of three services: the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), the New Zealand Army, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), as well as ‘tri-service’ components.

In the past, the military forces from New Zealand that fought alongside other British Empire and Dominion troops during World War I (1914–1918) and World War II (1939–1945) were known as the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). Ultimately, the NZEF of World War I became known as the First NZEF (1NZEF). The NZEF of World War II was known as the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force (2NZEF).
