A Scottish clan (from Scottish Gaelic clann, literally ‘children’, more broadly ‘kindred’) is a kinship group among the Scottish Highland and Lowland people of Scotland. Furthermore, Clans give members a sense of shared heritage and descent. In modern times, there is an official structure recognised by the Court of the Lord Lyon, which regulates Scottish heraldry and coats of arms.
Each clan boasts its unique Highland or Lowland tartan pattern, accompanied by a heraldic crest, motto, and badge, with many designs originating in the 19th century. Members proudly wear these tartans and incorporate them into kilts and other attire, honouring their lineage and celebrating the vibrant culture of Scotland.
